Unexpected Polylecty in the Bee Genus Meganomia (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Melittidae)
The melittid bees represent an early branch of bee phylogeny. They are therefore of special interest in understanding the early evolution and diversification of bees. Most species have been observed to be oligolectic (i.e., highly specialized in their choice of host-plant species). However, knowledge of host-plant associations is not equivalent across all melittid groups. Dasypodainae and the M...
متن کاملTaxonomic revision of Plesianthidium Cameron (Apoidea: Megachilidae: Anthidiini), an endemic southern African bee genus.
The southern African bee genus Plesianthidium Cameron is revised. It comprises twelve species. Two new species are described: Plesianthidium (Spinanthidium) richtersveldense sp. nov. (Namibia and South Africa) and P. (S.) namaquaense sp. nov. (South Africa). Two species, Plesianthidium calvini (Cockerell, 1932) and P. rufocaudatum (Friese, 1909), are reinstated as valid species. Keys for the id...
متن کاملRevision of the African horntail genus Afrotremex (Hymenoptera: Siricidae).
Afrotremex is one of ten extant genera of Siricidae, known as horntails or woodwasps. Species are restricted to the central forested regions of Africa. Their biology and economic significance are unknown. However, the host of one species, A. xylophagus, is known. Their larvae are wood-boring insects. The genus consists of six species: Afrotremex hyalinatus (Mocsáry), A. violaceus Pasteels, A. c...
متن کاملTwo new species of Geodiscelis Michener & Rozen (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Colletidae) with a phylogenetic analysis and subgeneric classification of the genus.
Two new species of the genus Geodiscelis are described: Geodiscelis nazcalinea Packer & Dumesh, sp. nov. from Peru (the first record of the genus from that country) and G. phisquiri Packer & Dumesh, sp. nov. from northern Chile. The new species are most closely related to G. longiceps, but differ primarily in having somewhat less elongate heads and in details of the male terminalia. A key to th...
متن کاملA revision of the endemic South African sac spider genus Lessertina Lawrence, 1942 (Araneae: Eutichuridae).
The endemic South African sac spider genus Lessertina Lawrence, 1942, previously known only from the type species (L. mutica Lawrence, 1942), is revised. Both sexes of L. mutica are redescribed and the species is recorded from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo Provinces. A new species, L. capensis sp. nov., is described from the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces.
